Former governor of New York Andrew Cuomo claims that NY AG Letitia James’s case against Trump was motivated by politics.
Former Democratic Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo recently told HBO host Bill Maher that former President Trump would never have faced prosecution in the state for his payments of hush money if he had not been a presidential candidate.
The former governor said as much on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” on Friday, concurring with the host that the case against Trump was overly politicised and that the New York District Attorney should not have pursued it.
Cuomo stated on air that “the attorney general’s case in New York simply should have never been brought,” adding that people in the state who don’t even like Trump are insulted by it because it appears to be the weaponization of the legal system.
Cuomo launched his attack on the case by noting how many New Yorkers don’t think it’s a fair case, despite the fact that Trump was found guilty on 34 charges of fabricating business documents.
Sixty-six percent of New Yorkers claimed that the legal system is politicised in response to the trials. Furthermore, hardly one in New York likes Trump “, he remarked. According to 66% of respondents, the legal system is still politicised. Because they see it as political, I believe he is not paying the same price for these verdicts.
Cuomo, who resigned from office as governor in 2021 due to a sexual harassment controversy, stated that the real danger to democracy is the way these cases erode public confidence in the fairness of the legal system.
“And you want to talk about a threat to democracy: when you have this country believing you’re playing politics with the justice system and you’re trying to put people in jail or convict them for political reasons, then we have a real problem,” he continued.
Maher continued by discussing the amount of money that Trump’s followers had sent him in response to his conviction, referring to it as the “greatest fundraising bonanza ever.”
In other places, he echoed Cuomo’s views regarding the hush money trial, stating, “I don’t think they should have brought that one.” People would always perceive it as a sex case because that is how it would always appear.”
In agreement, the former governor and attorney general of New York continued, claiming that Trump was the target of the lawsuit because of his identity.
I’m the former AG of New York, and I can assure you that this lawsuit would never have been brought if his name hadn’t been Donald Trump and he hadn’t been campaigning for president. And that’s what irritates individuals.”
“And it should be,” he continued, adding, “because if there’s anything left, it’s belief in the justice system.”
